I suddenly realized that instrument making is a wonderful blend of woodworking, music, art, and science. To that end I built a (crude) unfretted clavichord. Right away, I built two more which were a LOT better than the first one. I then built a spinet harpsichord after Hitchcock and a generic Italian virginal, based on general descriptions of such instruments. John Phillips evaluated the spinet, and told me to make some corrections, mainly dealing with the action. After making these changes, I took the spinet to MusicSources to offer it for sale. Laurette Goldberg, at MusicSources, had a technician do a final voicing, and she then sold it. My first sale! At this point, I'm building two more spinets, so as to know one instrument before moving on to others. I plan to build the virginal after Perticis, as well as other small early keyboard instruments. Yes, I'm a new builder. As such, I'm on an incredible learning curve. I'm making the transition from furniture making to instrument making, and, if I say so myself, it's going very well.
